Continuing its long-standing practice, the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IPVN) has released statistics on the number of domestic patent and industrial design applications filed and granted in Vietnam in 2025. The data provide an overview of recent developments in the national IP landscape and serve as a useful reference for IP practitioners and prospective applicants considering Vietnam as a potential market.
Patent and industrial design applications
Over the years, the number of applications filed by Vietnamese applicants has increased considerably, with 2025 marking a distinct upsurge in the number of patent applications filed, as illustrated in the chart below.

As illustrated in Chart 1, the number of design applications in 2025 showed a modest increase to 2,134 applications, compared with the relatively stagnant figures of around 2,000 applications recorded in the previous years. In contrast, the number of patent applications (including both inventions and utility solutions) filed by Vietnamese applicants witnessed a more pronounced increase of nearly 700 applications. This reflects the continued upward trend in domestic patent filings since 2022 and represents almost twice the annual growth observed in the prior years, reaching a total of 2,586 applications, approximately double the figure recorded in 2022.
Overall, despite minor year-to-year fluctuations, both patent and design filings have demonstrated a general upward trend over the past five years. These outcomes may partly be attributed to awareness campaigns and outreach initiatives promoted by the IPVN, including efforts to raise awareness of IP protection and training programs on patent and design information searches and patent specification drafting for research institutes, universities, businesses, and researchers. Strong economic development may also have contributed to this trend.
Granted patent and design cases
Consistent with the notable growth in the number of domestic applications in general, the number of granted patents and granted designs also experiences an increase, albeit to a significantly higher degree, as illustrated in the following chart.

By mid-2025, the number of granted cases had already shown a considerable increase compared with the same period in the previous years, as discussed in our earlier article. By the end of 2025, the figure had risen even more significantly. In particular, as shown above, the number of granted patents and granted designs both nearly doubled compared with the previous years, exceeding 1,100 and 2,000 granted cases, respectively. Furthermore, the number of patents granted in 2025 alone is nearly four times the figure recorded in 2022 and is almost as high as the combined totals for 2023 and 2024.
As mentioned in the Intellectual Property Activities Annual Report 2024 issued by the IPVN, clearing the backlog of applications from prior years has been identified as one of the key priorities, this objective is clearly reflected in the improved processing speed of the IPVN. Together with the amended Law on Intellectual Property, which will come into force on 1 April 2026, shortening many time limits (for more details, please see our article on this matter), these developments are expected to benefit both domestic and international applicants.
